Distance MAc

Admission Requirements

Admission to Auburn's MAc Program is based on consideration of the applicant's proven ability to perform academic work at a superior level, leadership qualities, and overall accomplishments.  The Committee on Graduate Study in Accountancy takes a holistic approach when reviewing a candidate's application package. The Committee considers a candidate's academic background, letters of recommendation, grade point averages, GMAT scores, work experience, campus and community involvement, etc.

To be considered for admission to Auburn's MAc Program, a candidate must:

  • Meet the General Admission Requirements of the Graduate School as outlined in the Graduate Bulletin.

  • Submit acceptable scores on the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT).   A candidate's GMAT score must not be older than five years. The GMAT exam is not waived for candidates who have professional certifications or for candidates who have completed another graduate degree.

  • Submit acceptable scores on the TOEFL for applicants whose native language is not English. The TOEFL is required for students that do not hold an accredited undergraduate degree from a U.S. college or university.

  • Have acceptable overall and accounting grade point averages.

  • Have a four-year business degree from an accredited institution with a concentration in accounting. See the MAc Program Prerequisite Check Sheet for a list of prerequisites. Candidates who have business undergraduate degrees but did not major in accounting may take the undergraduate accounting prerequisites via distance learning at Auburn University.

  • Submit three acceptable letters of recommendation using the Online Recommendation Request Sytem. If you have difficulty using the online recommendation system, you may print the recommendation form and have your references mail your recommendation to MAc Program Admissions, 359 Lowder Building; Auburn University, AL 36849.

Transfer Credit Policy

  • Policy of the Graduate School:
Graduate credit taken in residence at another approved graduate school may be transferred to Auburn University. No prior commitment is made concerning whether transfer credit will be accepted. A student must earn at least 24 semester hours, or half of the total hours required for a master’s degree, whichever is greater, at Auburn University. A program that requires 30 hours of credit will be limited to 6 semester hours of transfer credit. No such limitation is applied to doctoral degrees except 18 semester hours must be earned as a graduate student at Auburn University in graded course work at the 7000-level or above. The credit must be acceptable to the student’s advisory committee and be pertinent to the student’s Plan of Study. No transfer credit will be approved without two official transcripts. No course on which a grade lower than a B was earned may be transferred. Additionally, credit will not be allowed if the combined GPA on graduate work taken at other schools is less than 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, nor may transfer credit be used to improve the GPA on courses taken at Auburn University. All transferred credit to be counted toward a master’s or specialist degree must have been earned within five years of the date the Auburn degree is awarded. There is no such time limit on credit for doctoral degrees.
  • Policy of the Master of Accountancy (MAc) Program:
    1) Student must meet all of the requirements of the Graduate School’s “Transfer of Credit from Other Institutions” policy as outlined above.
    2) Transfer credit hours must be from an AACSB accredited accounting program.
    3) Transfer credit will apply towards elective hours only (i.e., either an accounting elective or business elective.)
    4) Credit hours earned from another institution after a student is admitted to the Master of Accountancy program may not be transferred.
